The bold styling of the 4M and 4R Tractors provide an attractive and functional appearance similar to that of the larger agricultural tractors. Benefits of this styling include:

  • Easy tractor family identification
  • Updated fixed grille and side panel hood design allows for optimum sealing of the cooling compartment
    • Front grille slides up to an integrated maintenance position for easy battery access
  • Easily removable cowl, allowing for serviceability access
  • Wraparound-style halogen headlights
    • Premium integrated automotive style headlight bezels
  • Bold graphics
  • Aggressively sloped hood design, giving a softer, smoother look and providing improved visibility
  • Hybrid exhaust in base on cab tractors for clear operator visibility and safety
    • At low speed and when tractor is in a filter cleaning process, exhaust will be routed through vertical exhaust outlet. In all other cases, the exhaust will be routed through the downward exhaust outlet.
    • Side exhaust in base on open operator station tractors and ensures minimal heat impact to operator

The result gives the tractor a distinctive appearance and feel.

NOTE:  If the tractor is equipped with an optional field-installed vertical exhaust, exhaust pipe must be removed before opening and closing the hood of the tractor.

The engine uses the latest technologies to optimize fuel economy, improve control and accuracy, and reduce environmental impact.

The common rail system (CRS) optimizes fuel economy and reduces operating costs*. High-pressure injection atomizes fuel into finer particles which burn more completely. It results in improved fuel economy and lower cost of operation.

The electronic control unit (ECU) provides optimum fuel control and accuracy. ECU monitors and controls the engine. It continuously monitors engine conditions and adjusts the fuel delivery accordingly to ensure optimum performance and emissions.

The new engine comes with an after treatment system. The system operates automatically. The exhaust filter consists of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which captures particulate matter (PM) contained in the exhaust gas. Using a natural cleaning process, most of the PM trapped in the exhaust filter is eliminated by the heat of the exhaust stream generated by normal use. In situations of low temperature, engine speed or load factor, an active cleaning cycle is initiated. In this cleaning cycle, the exhaust gas temperature is raised by injecting additional fuel during the exhaust stroke of normal vehicle operation to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC).

After many hours of use, the exhaust filter may require an ash removal service.

NOTE: *As compared to engines not using CRS technology.

DPF cleaning

Depending on the load that the tractor is under, as well as ambient temperature, humidity, and engine speed, the DPF may build up with particulate matter, thus requiring cleaning. Filter cleaning is determined by one of three conditions:

  • A prescribed time-based estimation of needed filter cleaning
  • DOC/DPF pressure sensors
  • A particulate matter buildup estimation based on load conditions

Once one of the three conditions has been met, filter cleaning will occur.

There are three different types of filter cleaning processes:

  • Passive filter cleaning
  • Active filter cleaning
  • Parked filter cleaning

Passive filter cleaning

Passive filter cleaning occurs naturally when the engine is generating enough heat to oxidize particulate matter. This automatic process occurs continuously during normal operating conditions. No tractor icons or symbols appear on the display during passive filter cleaning.

NOTE: Passive filter cleaning requires no operator involvement, and there is no interruption to tractor operation.

Active filter cleaning

If conditions (temperature, load, or speed) for passive filter cleaning cannot be achieved, then PM is removed using active filter cleaner.

To achieve the required conditions, exhaust temperature management (ETM) manages the initiation and duration of active filter cleaning. ETM can adjust numerous engine parameters and/or inject a small quantity of fuel into the exhaust stream for a short duration. The fuel turns to vapor and chemically reacts with the catalysts in the DOC to create heat to oxidize PM.

It is important to note that at no time is the fuel in the DOC/DPF ignited, and there is no flame within the DOC/DPF.

Like passive filter cleaning, active filter cleaning requires no operator involvement, and there is no interruption to tractor operation.

Parked filter cleaning

In some instances where passive and active filter cleaning have not fully cleaned the PM from the system, a parked filter cleaning may need to take place. Most likely, the only time a parked filter cleaning will need to occur is when automatic filter cleaning has been disabled for an extended period of time and multiple warnings to engage filter cleaning were ignored or if the tractor has been used during light load conditions. Additionally, when the automatic filter cleaning process has been deliberately interrupted multiple times, or if active filter cleaning has failed numerous times due to a failed component, a parked filter cleaning may be requested. In these rare instances the operator will have to park the tractor and start the filter cleaning process.

The parked filter cleaning process needs to be activated based on usage and operation of the tractor. The process will take approximately 30 minutes. See operator’s manual for more details.

This system constantly monitors the soot level of the tractor, making sure the tractor is always in peak performance condition. This ensures high performance at all times.

NOTE:  Number of hours since last regeneration and soot level percentage viewable on LCD display.

Key John Deere advantage
Twin Touch foot controls Twin Touch foot controls
#

John Deere's Twin Touch foot controls offer key advantages over competitive hydro model tractors.

  • Some competitive hydrostatic tractors use a treadle pedal designed (toe-heel) foot control for operation of the hydro.
    • Requires the operator to use both toe and heel to change direction, resulting in increased operator fatigue
Integrated eHydro features

The eHydro convenience controls have been integrated into a single module. Combining features such as SpeedMatch™ LoadMatch™, MotionMatch, eThrottle, and automotive-style cruise control pulls the maximum efficiency out of the eHydro transmission tractors. All these features are standard on the 4M Heavy Duty and 4R models and deliver customers an easier and more comfortable experience.

LoadMatch power management system
LoadMatch indicator LoadMatch indicator
#

LoadMatch is a standard feature on the 4M Heavy-Duty and 4R Series Tractors.

If torque requirements increase significantly, the transmission will reduce the tractor's drive speed to compensate for the increased load on the transmission, maximizing torque to drive wheels and minimizing stalls.

Controls automatically adjust LoadMatch compensation depending on the tractor’s application. PTO applications require less engine speed fluctuation, therefore adjusting the amount of droop depending on PTO speed. This adjustment increases efficiency and optimizes engine speed and torque output based on tractor application.

While typically left on, LoadMatch can be turned off with the right-hand console controls.

MotionMatch

MotionMatch, standard on the 4M Heavy-Duty and 4R Series Tractors, is located on the right-hand console. It offers seven settings for adjusting the rollout or decelerating when the pedal is released.

SpeedMatch, standard on the 4M Heavy-Duty and 4R Series Tractors, further enhances the eHydro cruise control functions by allowing the operator to preset maximum speed. Once this feature is engaged, the operator must stroke the travel pedal fully to meet the operator’s preset speed and press the Set button to lock the speed. From there, the operator can use the automotive-style cruise controls to adjust speed. This function will improve accuracy and safety, particularly at lower travel speed applications.

Rotary tilling or spraying applications are examples of where SpeedMatch can be applied. SpeedMatch will work in both the forward and reverse set speeds.

NOTE: Automotive-style cruise control and SpeedMatch can be used in conjunction with LoadMatch to maximize productivity.

NOTE: The bushing set can be seen in the picture above. These bushings allow the hooks on the iMatch and the pins on the implement to fit together properly. All other implements (box blades, tillers, rear blades, etc.) will require a set of bushings to enlarge the pin to fit with the iMatch hooks. Bushings of different lengths can be found in the Parts system or through a bushing supplier (see dimensions below).

  • Upper bushing
    • Inside diameter: 1.93-1.06 cm (0.76-0.77 in.)
    • Outside diameter: 3.15 to 3.43 cm (1.24-1.25 in.)
    • Lower bushings
      • Inside diameter: 2.24 to 2.26 cm (0.88 to 0.89 in.)
      • Outside diameter: 3.63 to 3.66 cm (1.43 to 1.44 in.)
Save fuel, reduce noise, and increase engine life with the economy power take-off (PTO)

The optional field-installed 540/540 economy power take-off (PTO) allows operators to select the engine rpm needed for their PTO application. The economy position provides 540 rpm to the PTO at approximately 70 percent of the engine's normal rated speed. The engine runs at a rated speed of approximately 1750 rpm in the 540 economy position. The 540 economy is ideal for any PTO application, from running a mower to a baler or a cutter, where full horsepower is not needed. Operating at lower engine rpm decreases fuel costs during tasks. The overall operating experience improves because there is less noise and vibration for the operator.

A conveniently located lever (behind the seat of the tractor) allows the operator to simply change between 540 and 540E when conditions merit the opportunity to save fuel without affecting performance. For heavy-duty operations that require maximum PTO power, the PTO shift lever is placed in the 540 position, the PTO engaged, and the engine is run at rated speed of 2400 rpm. This selection gives 540 rpm to the PTO shaft and delivers the full-advertised horsepower at rated engine speed.

The 540/540 economy PTO offers all the features of the standard 540-rpm PTO, and the safety interlock
is a foolproof measure provided to compensate for operator oversight. When the tractor is in economy,
the engine is limited to a lower operating speed, preventing accidental over speeding of PTO implements
and protecting against binding the PTO shaft. The safety interlock also prevents accidental shifting of
the PTO selector lever at higher engine speeds than the economy PTO setting, which would lead to
downtime to fix implements or drivetrains.

Excellent serviceability reduces operational costs and improves productivity

Regular service and maintenance are essential to the performance, productivity, and longevity of the tractor.

  • Easy access to regular service points minimizes service time.
  • Easily removable cowl and side panels, improved hood design, and integrated maintenance position on the grille provide easy accessibility for routine maintenance.
  • Tractors are equipped with extensive onboard self-diagnostic capabilities and are fully compatible with John Deere’s exclusive Service ADVISOR™ system.
  • Daily service requirements are minimal and simple to accomplish. Most service interval requirements can be performed with a basic understanding of procedures and common tools.
  • Improved cost of ownership
    • Hydraulic oil service interval changed from 400 to 1200 hours (or 3 years) when using Hy-Gard™ products
Removable side panels Removable side panels
Integrated grille maintenance position Integrated grille maintenance position
Removable cowl Removable cowl

All items in the daily service schedule can be performed without the use of tools:

  • Engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant level, and the water separator can be conveniently accessed
  • The engine can be easily accessed by simply raising the hood for more periodic maintenance checks
  • A single-point latch mechanism and self-contained leash ensure easy hood opening and closure

NOTE:  Always refer to the operator’s manual for complete maintenance and service recommendations.

Great tractor, but some frustrations.

I ordered this tractor in February, 2022 and finally arrived in July. Ordered with 3rd function hydraulics on loader. The tractor came from factory without the 3rd function installed, but was shipped with valve and lines, but rear lines were sent instead of front. Had to order front lines, which took 8 weeks+. In the meantime, had a leak on one of the 440 loader cylinders, turned out to be a loose hose fitting from factory which corrected with a snugging up of the fitting. After front lines installed, big leaks at two fittings under cab to the 3rd function lines. Dealer was accommodating and sent tech to the farm to inspect and repair under warranty, rather than me having to load it up and haul to dealer shop. My prior Deere tractors and mowers have always been good out of the chute. Other than these leaks, no issues. The tractor is strong for it’s size and runs all my implements well- MX5 cutter, 7’ box blade, 7’ disc harrow, PHD 200 post hole digger and MTL dual cylinder grapple. Cab is comfortable and controls are well placed. Overall still very pleased, but attention to detail (like confirming proper torque on line fittings) is frustrating on a new tractor at this price point. Fortunately, dealer is responsive and made things right.

Love it so far

I ordered a 4052R Cab after purchasing more land; previously had a 2038R (which was great for its size) but simply needed more tractor. The fact that my 2038R worked hard with no mechanical issues had me coming back to Deere for my next tractor. My parcel has a large amount of timber, so I wanted to keep width to a minimum. Doing more and heavier loader work and cutting a 18 acre pasture, so the higher HP and load capacity was needed. So far, this has been a great tractor. Plenty of power for my needs, including grapple work, and I have very much enjoyed the comfort of an air conditioned cab and not being covered with dust and clippings and dealing with insects (esp. the yellow jackets). Living on the Gulf Coast, the A/C has also been a huge plus in increasing the amount of time I can actually work and not having to take several breaks during the day from the heat. The tractor pulls a 7’ disk harrow, box blade and my MX cutter with ease, and the 3 range tranny is great. Like my 2038R, it has the hydrostatic drive which also makes operation easier and less fatiguing. I did a lot of research before purchasing, and found this best for my needs, as I did not need all the bells and whistles that come standard on the 4066R (at a price) without any significant diminishment in ability to do the job. Unlike other reviewers, I do not find the noise level in the cab to be excessive, and you can enjoy the Bluetooth stereo just fine. Cab size is fine for me once inside (I am 6’2” and 210 lbs). Will update review after about 100-150 hrs.

3 powertrain issues in 5 years

I have than up time with this tractor. 3 powertrain issues many many weeks out of service. The dealers and the company don't seem to care that they sold me a lemon of a tractor. Will never buy another John Deere based on my experience.

wonderful little tractor

I purchased my 4052R and H180 new over three years and 500 hours ago. I maintain about 30 acres, put up hay, clear brush, and all the associated miscellaneous tasks with this tractor. Knock on wood, but I have not had any major issues with the tractor. Yes I've had the miscellaneous broken hydraulic hoses/fittings, failed o-rings, broken AM/FM antenna; anyone familiar with a working tractor should realize these things are to be expected. I've also caused self-induced damage (broken headlight/grill, etc.). Everything was relatively easy to fix. I have had a reoccurring failure of the equalizer pin link on the H180 loader which appears to be a flaw and is a bit frustrating. Some of the negatives listed by other reviewers are in fact positives to me. For example, it takes all of three minutes to remove the grill and side engine panels - it's well thought-out and I'm not sure how it could be any simpler. The tractor is very maneuverable and powerful for it's size. Love the smooth hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulics will out-lift the tractor. I am 5'10" and 160 lbs, cab is very comfortable and ergonomic. Joystick and dealer installed hydraulic connection up the loader boom are much better than previous generations in terms of ergonomics and ease of use. Heat and AC work great and do wonderful in the Wyoming extremes. The throttle settings such as the one that automatically adjusts throttle to increase ground speed (very similar to a car's throttle), cruise control, load-match anti engine bog, are all very handy and useful. The plastics, glass, and machine overall is well-built and not "cheap." I got a kick out of the reviewer who said his 4052 was poor quality so he was going to get a 4066, which is essentially the same machine with a modification for a bit more horsepower out of the same engine. I'm not too big a fan of the egr/regen system, but it is what it is these days. At least no def is required. Still kindof a pain to regen occasionally.

Pros:

  • numerous throttle/cruise control options
  • hitch assist
  • ergonomics
  • power
  • heat & ac
  • mfwd
  • free online parts book
  • stopping distance adjustment

Cons:
  • parts & fluids cost

BeSt of the compact tractors and could use a few tweakS

I bought my 2015 model in August 2015 and it was built in May and I had them swap out the R4 tires for the R1 titan tires and I ended up purchasing the ergonomic seat cushions and air suspension seat and the 30° gas struts for the rear window instead of the 70° and got a custom short exhaust stack and an additional radiator screen and the rear work lights and radio. I used this tractor from 2015 until 2019 to do commercial bush hogging with a Woods Brush Bull BB 72X rotary cutter as well as a John Deere 509 commercial duty 5 foot rotary cutter. I also used a 40inch Rototiller and a 5 foot Rototiller on it and a box blade. It was a comfortable Tractor and it has good power and I love the load match feature that prevents the engine from bogging down when mowing tall vegetation! The regular daily cleaning of the cabin filter at the top back of the cab was not able to be done satisfactorily because of a small opening and a large air-conditioning condenser that I could not access without having the dealer remove the roof once or twice a year at a significant expense. The necessity to remove the front grill by lifting it out and takeoff the side panels and lift the hood instead of having a one piece hood and grill like on the 4020 series tractors required significantly more time and effort then should be the case. The hitch assist was a useful feature and I never had a problem with mine but I do wonder if telescoping Lake ends and or a quick-tatch hitch would have been adequate. The wiring and the mechanical front wheel drive shaft cover did get caught and pulled and torn and damaged from the work that I did and it would’ve been nice to have a one piece metal driveline cover and have the wiring be protected with metal covers with quick touch pins. Also, it is difficult to clean the radiator properly as there is not adequate space to get a snow broom in there and all the debris ends up collecting at the bottom so it really is necessary to use an air gun.

Pros:

  • e-hydro
  • electronic engine and speed management system
  • quiet with epto option

Cons:
  • cleaning of a/c condenser and cab filter
  • non one piece hood and grille
  • easily breakable antenna
  • windshield washer placement
  • drive shaft cover
  • witing underneath unprotected

disappointing and trading in at a loss

I bought this tractor in 2018. I maintain about 25 acres, and the tractor just does not have enough power for our farm and the hills. Around 50 hours had to go to the dealer for a cylinder leak. At 102 hours it had to go to the dealer for a transmission leak. At 120 hours (now) it went back for a rocker arm leak. My family has used John Deere products for years, but this one is disappointing. Difficult to open hood. Fenders are cheap and super easy to break. I'm trading it in for a 4066R and will try again, but it's costing me for sure.

Pros:

  • easy of changing implements.
  • ease of use.
  • nice cab.

Cons:
  • poor quality.

A versatile and surprisingly powerful compact tractor

I have a cab 4052R with a 440 loader with almost 200 hours on it and have had the tractor for just over one year. I am about 5-10 and 155 lbs. and the cab fits me fine although I think someone over 6 feet tall might have issues. The tractor is powerful for a 52 hp tractor and is very maneuverable for a MFWD tractor. The hydraulics are also quite strong for a tractor this size. The AC in the cab will freeze you and it is hot where I live. I have had an AC belt shred on me and the hitch assist stopped working but have not had any major issues with the tractor. The seat is comfortable and I can spend all day in the tractor in comfort. The quality of the John Deere tractor is there and I highly recommend the 4052R.

Multiple breakdowns

I have thus far been disappointed with my 4052r due to multiple breakdowns. Fan belt broke the first week, hydraulic fitting the first year and then an electrical issue with over 4 months of the tractor being at the dealer. Then it was the backup assist. Now it has a solenoid issue causing it to shut down when reversing. When it runs it’s great but reliability is a major concern.

Pros:

  • cab is comfortable
  • good power

Cons:
  • multiple breakdowns

POOR ERGONOMICS and tight cab

I put about a hundred hours a month on the tractor, so you could say I spend a lot of time in it. This tractor was purchased to replace a 2000 John Deere 4600 with nearly 5000 hours. I'll be overhauling the 4600 since I like it so much. This tractor, not so much. I'm 6'1" tall, and 225 lbs, and the cab is very uncomfortable for me. While my left calf is hitting the parking brake lever (if it's not tripping me up as I enter and exit the tractor), my right calf is getting constantly poked by the metal end of the joystick lock. I've resorted to taping a piece of foam over the joystick lock, and also fabricating a spacer under the seat frame to lift me up a couple of inches, and back as far as possible to gain a little more room. Then, I tilted the seat up in front so the back rest is not so vertical that it pushes me in a way that gives me a crotch wedgie (ouch). I appreciate the cab, AC, and heat, but if given the choice, I'll be using my 4600 whenever possible.

Pros:

  • it's pretty

Cons:
  • it's painful to drive for extended periods
